UNTIL THE CONVENTION OPENS IN ALBUQUERQUE

At this point you cannot register, make changes, or purchase banquet tickets until you are at the convention. The registration desk will open on Thursday, June 6 at 1:00PM and remain open throughout the convention days. You may register in Albuquerque, registration fees will be $5 higher and there will be the option of a one day registration for Friday, Saturday or Sunday at $60 per day. With the one day registration, you may sign up for any classes only on the day you select.

We certainly hope you will not have to cancel, but if you do, just send an email to Susan Webster, cancellation fees are explained on this website HERE.

The only exception to the above is that if we get cancellations on pre-convention workshops, we will post a notice on the convention blog at and you can contact Susan to book.

Space is still available on MC1, WS2, WS6. If you want to book one of these, email Susan. If you want to get into a class that shows as being filled, check at the registration desk in Albuquerque, any tickets returned due to cancellations will be offered for sale, and you may be lucky!

We have an exciting lineup of workshops, classes and demonstrations for the Tenth Biennial Convention.

You may make reservations at Hotel Albuquerque at any time; click here for more information. We expect the convention hotel to fill completely, and have additional rooms available at a nearby hotel; information about that is on the same web page.

When planning your travel, keep in mind that the Convention Exhibitions will open with a reception on Wednesday evening, June 5. The exhibitions will be held within the hotel and the opening reception will begin at 5:00 pm.

Pre-convention workshops begin Wednesday and Thursday, and this year there will be two post-convention workshops on the Monday and Tuesday following the close of the convention.

There are several types of presentations to choose from:

DEMONSTRATIONS:

The instructor will work on a painting and give comments on his/her technique, supplies, etc. These sessions run either two or three hours. Painting demonstrations are projected onto a large screen so everyone can see what the instructor is painting.

WORKSHOPS:

One or two days as specified; instructors will demonstrate and participants will work on their own paintings. Participants must bring all supplies; see recommended supply list with each workshop listing. Limit 20-25 in each workshop.

MASTER CLASSES:

For advanced students; students must hold signature membership in a Member Society or have accrued 3 or more points towards IAPS Master Circle membership. See recommended supply list with each listing. Limit 20-25 in each class.

SEMINARS:

A business-related presentation or lecture (no painting demonstration).

CRITIQUES:

Bring a printed portfolio, or a portfolio on your own digital device, for a one-on-one personal critique by magazine editor or publisher.

Designing your Painting with an Organizational Shape

The demonstration will explain the concept of an organizational shape — a massed shape used to organize a composition. Doug will consider different types of shapes, such as dark and dark middle values; light and light middle values; dominant colors. He will explain their strength and attributes — for example, they may have interesting edges because they are a collection of objects. Participants will develop the organizational shapes as black and white thumbnails, then selected thumbnails will be developed into paintings. Simply Nature: From Realistic to Evocative

This intensive workshop will include a full demonstration and mini demonstrations as needed plus discussion, sharing work for constructive input, and guidance at individual easels. Participants should bring one or two unframed landscape paintings to share, after which they will be encouraged to work from them or from a photograph they have taken to create mood that will resonate emotionally with viewers. Note: To attend a Master Class, participants must hold a Signature Membership in a Member Society or have accrued 3 or more points towards IAPS Master Circle membership.

WS2 - CLARK MITCHELL

Powerful Landscapes through Rich Underpainting and High Contrast

Clark will talk about choosing an expressive scene, sketching, editing and creating a dynamic composition. Starting with a vivid underpainting and stressing high contrast in all aspects of landscape painting, he will demonstrate how to create the illusion of space, navigate middle stages and use details to complete a rich and eye-catching scene. Plenty of demos and at-easel assistance. Students will paint from their own photo references.

Rich Underpainting & Vibrant Light

Learn how Terri’s use of rich underpainting, combined with layers of pastel, create paintings that depict luminous, vibrant light. Day One will focus on establishing strong underpaintings with various approaches. Day Two will emphasize painting the light using pure pigment, varying temperatures and complimentary colors as opposed to white lights.

Workshop participants will develop abstractions from source drawings and small color studies. Paint The Figure in Pastels with Live Model

Margaret teaches a simple step-by-step method of pastel painting. Working with a live model, students will explore drawing, anatomy, proportion, value and color. For those wanting to speed up and become less tight in their work, this will be an excellent class. All skill levels are welcome.

WS6 - CHRISTINE DEBROSKY

1 day Outdoor Workshop, Thursday, 9:00 am-4:00 pm … $170

By the Garden Gate

Set in the hotel’s charming Southwest style courtyard, Christine will demonstrate, explaining technique, how to handle greens, and simplify architectural elements. Participants will work on their own plein air rendition, with individual at-easel attention and guidance in handling a complex subject in a direct manner. Bring a selection of your own garden photos, to be used indoors in case of bad weather. Christine will provide a hand-out on how to best utilize references, and conclude with a gentle discussion/critique.

Making Your Mark

Do you ever find yourself just filling in passages in your painting? Over-rendering an area where just three beautifully placed marks would create a stronger and more beautiful solution? Join Kim in exploring the power and importance of mark making, and how the quality of your marks will help to define your style. Following a short discussion and demonstration, each artist will set up and paint for the rest of the day. Kim will address questions, and will respectfully assist at your easel.

Water Scenes & Reflections

Andrew will show how to develop a sea or water scene in pastel in a creative, loose and painterly approach. He will demonstrate how to build up a value painting and develop it into a color work. Andrew has created an intriguing way to show an approach that is simple, yet still develops into a lush, impressionistic painting. Learn how to paint an atmospheric water scene with reflections, and some tricks and tips to create depth and movement in water.

Pastel & H2O — Special Effects and Textures

Work dry. Work wet. Pastels can do both. This workshop explores the exciting potential for achieving wonderful special effects, rich textures and impastos and color washes from working pastels with water. All the techniques and materials necessary to do wet pastel paintings are taught in this hands-on informative workshop. Students work from their own studies or photo references along with demonstrations and one to one personal instruction.

The Painterly Colorist

This workshop involves the use of a painterly underpainting with lively colors followed by pastelling that is enhanced by the use of color and brush strokes. The purpose is to convey a free, open, colorful mood in your work. Townscapes, cityscapes and harbors will be the subject matter.

Debora’s abstractions are often intuitive, expressive responses to nature. Learn how she begins her work from small thumbnail sketches, to color studies and then develops larger works. The artist will show how she uses underpainting and charcoal washes to develop movement and line in her paintings.

Karin loves pastels for their easy manipulation and directness of application. Richard will discuss the importance of working on location and why pastel is the perfect media for doing so by demonstrating a pastel field sketch. Topics covered: setting up a well-organized lightweight pastel palette, the necessity of secure equipment, proper positioning, and when to do a pastel field sketch versus a more elaborate painting. The desire to paint glowing, sparkling sunlight is universal among artists. By paying careful attention to shadows, the contrast of illuminated areas can result in a convincing rendition of sunlit effects. Shadows don’t just lie there! By placing rich, nuanced color in dark areas, you can add excitement and life. Such questions as edge handling, color temperature, reflected light, light direction and quality, and modeling of form will be addressed in this session.

The presentation begins with a slide show of Desmond’s pastels including two step-by-steps of works in progress. Painting Natural Landscape Components

This workshop is for students already familiar with pastel techniques. Elizabeth will demonstrate her methods of creating mood in a landscape consisting of only natural components. Then she will discuss and demonstrate very subtle ways of adding and subtracting to extend and deepen the mood even more. Participants should bring reference photos they have taken, and will receive guidance at their easels from Elizabeth.

Animal Portraits

Learn the essentials of painting animal portraits. Mike's demonstration will be followed by working on individual projects with lots of one-to-one assistance. He will cover the systematic process of blocking in, simplifying, getting the right value relationships, and working with edges, and the rendering of fur, feathers and features. Bring photos of subject matter that is of interest to you. Mike will have a small selection to choose from as well.

Capturing the Delicate Light and Color of Flowers

Concentrating on the tonal values, hard and soft edges, and the delicate transparent qualities of flowers, Donna will discuss looking for patterns and rhythms as she paints. She will explain and demonstrate why color is a key component, where to place stronger colors in relation to less dominant ones, working quickly to establish the overall values and colors then the smaller shapes as the painting progresses.

Painting Dynamic Rock Formations

Dennis will begin with a brief talk about materials and the importance of thumbnails. Then using objects from more than one black and white reference photo, he will show how to paint rock formations in landscapes on white Wallis paper over an underpainting using varied values of Orange Luma watercolor dye. Using Photographs to create Painterly Children’s Portraits

Photographs can be a valuable resource for children’s portraiture. Understanding their strengths and limitations is essential for creating a portrait that is painterly and reminiscent of working from life. This workshop will focus on simplifying the process of getting a likeness and painting beautiful skin tones. Directions for taking your own photographs are included in the materials list.

The Expressive Landscape

Focus on three fundamental theories pertaining to landscape: simultaneous contrast, atmospheric perspective, and focal point. The better you understand them, the better you will express your artistic intent. Richard's demonstration will show how they influence initial compositional choices, the underpainting setup, and the final pastel application. Participants will work on their own paintings with individual attention. A famous artist once expounded, “The world doesn’t need another good painting — tell us something with what you do!” This workshop will empower you to do just that.

Three Approaches to Exciting Color

Doug will take three unfinished paintings and illustrate how to use the field size theory, which says exciting color is the result of small areas of intense color set off against larger fields of dull color. One painting will lack small areas of intense color, one painting will have too much intense color and in the last painting, he will create exciting color by working over the surface with a unifying technique, which will leave small accents of colors here and there.
