REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED
UNTIL THE CONVENTION OPENS IN ALBUQUERQUE

At this point you cannot register, make changes, or purchase banquet tickets until you are at the convention.  The registration desk will open on Thursday, June 6 at 1:00PM and remain open throughout the convention days. You may register in Albuquerque, registration fees will be $5 higher and there will be the option of a one day registration for Friday, Saturday or Sunday at $60 per day.  With the one day registration, you may sign up for any classes only on the day you select.

We certainly hope you will not have to cancel, but if you do, just send an email to Susan Webster,  cancellation fees are explained on this website HERE.

The only exception to the above is that if we get cancellations on pre-convention workshops, we will post a notice on the convention blog at and you can contact Susan to book.

Space is still available on MC1, WS2, WS6. If you want to book one of these, email Susan. If you want to get into a class that shows as being filled, check at the registration desk in Albuquerque, any tickets returned due to cancellations will be offered for sale, and you may be lucky!

We have an exciting lineup of workshops, classes and demonstrations for the Tenth Biennial Convention.

You may make reservations at Hotel Albuquerque at any time; click here for more information. We expect the convention hotel to fill completely, and have additional rooms available at a nearby hotel; information about that is on the same web page.

When planning your travel, keep in mind that the Convention Exhibitions will open with a reception on Wednesday evening, June 5. The exhibitions will be held within the hotel and the opening reception will begin at 5:00 pm.

Pre-convention workshops begin Wednesday and Thursday, and this year there will be two post-convention workshops on the Monday and Tuesday following the close of the convention.

There are several types of presentations to choose from:

DEMONSTRATIONS:

The instructor will work on a painting and give comments on his/her technique, supplies, etc. These sessions run either two or three hours. Painting demonstrations are projected onto a large screen so everyone can see what the instructor is painting.

WORKSHOPS:

One or two days as specified; instructors will demonstrate and participants will work on their own paintings. Participants must bring all supplies; see recommended supply list with each workshop listing. Limit 20-25 in each workshop.

MASTER CLASSES:

For advanced students; students must hold signature membership in a Member Society or have accrued 3 or more points towards IAPS Master Circle membership. See recommended supply list with each listing. Limit 20-25 in each class.

SEMINARS:

A business-related presentation or lecture (no painting demonstration).

CRITIQUES:

Bring a printed portfolio, or a portfolio on your own digital device, for a one-on-one personal critique by magazine editor or publisher.

Designing your Painting with an Organizational Shape

The demonstration will explain the concept of an organizational shape — a massed shape used to organize a composition. Doug will consider different types of shapes, such as dark and dark middle values; light and light middle values; dominant colors. He will explain their strength and attributes — for example, they may have interesting edges because they are a collection of objects. Participants will develop the organizational shapes as black and white thumbnails, then selected thumbnails will be developed into paintings. Simply Nature: From Realistic to Evocative

This intensive workshop will include a full demonstration and mini demonstrations as needed plus discussion, sharing work for constructive input, and guidance at individual easels. Participants should bring one or two unframed landscape paintings to share, after which they will be encouraged to work from them or from a photograph they have taken to create mood that will resonate emotionally with viewers. Powerful Landscapes through Rich Underpainting and High Contrast

Clark will talk about choosing an expressive scene, sketching, editing and creating a dynamic composition. Set in the hotel’s charming Southwest style courtyard, Christine will demonstrate, explaining technique, how to handle greens, and simplify architectural elements. Participants will work on their own plein air rendition, with individual at-easel attention and guidance in handling a complex subject in a direct manner. Bring a selection of your own garden photos, to be used indoors in case of bad weather. Christine will provide a hand-out on how to best utilize references, and conclude with a gentle discussion/critique.

Three Approaches to Exciting Color

Doug will take three unfinished paintings and illustrate how to use the field size theory, which says exciting color is the result of small areas of intense color set off against larger fields of dull color. One painting will lack small areas of intense color, one painting will have too much intense color and in the last painting, he will create exciting color by working over the surface with a unifying technique, which will leave small accents of colors here and there.

By painting from an upside-down photo or sketch, the artist will work more from the right-side of the brain. This is a wonderful way to enhance your creativity by simplifying masses and using intuitive color to take the painter from the “thing-ness” of an image and to a cohesive and creative painterly finish.

Painting Colorful Trees & Grasses

Dennis will begin with a brief talk about the materials he uses and the importance of thumbnails. From black & white reference, he will show how to paint trees and grasses in landscapes on white Wallis Pastel paper over an underpainting, using Luma watercolor dyes. Placing cool dyes under warm pastels, and warm under cool. He will provide a full color printed handout explaining the demonstration.

A wonderful chance to consolidate the inspiration you have accumulated during the Convention and put it into practice, with dazzling skies, endless horizons, stunning vistas, and Liz’s experience painting the New Mexico landscape. She will start with how to simplify your travel setup, and cover plein air issues of selecting subjects, simplifying compositions, working with values, sketchbooking, focal points, aerial perspective and dealing with ever-changing light and weather conditions. All levels welcome — even if you have never painted outdoors before! A pre-workshop meeting will be held at the hotel on Sunday afternoon.

Capturing the light of the American Southwest

The American Southwest has a unique and inspiring light; for years artists have been drawn to its special quality. Join Lorenzo for an interesting indoor workshop in creating pastels that capture this special light and landscape. Focus on creating landscapes using effective edge quality, reflected light, colors of the southwest and the depiction of space. Lorenzo will demo a painting of the Southwest landscape daily, using both field sketches and photographic reference.
