This striking, figurative pastel generously shares the spontaneous, fresh expression of a highly competent study with keenly observed, penetrating observations characteristic of a detailed portrait. An unmistakable presence of mood, personality, thought, and attitude permeate this painting. There is a palpable link between the model's apparent, contemplative thoughts and her momentarily poised (and admirably foreshortened) hand. I find the expressiveness of gesture, angles of forms, color, light, and pastel application altogether riveting in this painting. ~ Robert Carsten
